Hormonal balance is essential for optimal health

Hormonal balance is essential for optimal health, energy, stamina, and happiness for both men and women. While the human body goes through stages of puberty to achieve hormonal balance, it is not uncommon for this balance to become disrupted as we age. Hormones control all bodily functions and imbalances can lead to a variety of unpleasant or distressing symptoms, including fatigue, memory disturbance, fluid retention, headaches, insomnia, mood changes and anxiety, loss of libido, changes in body fat, and skin and hair changes.

Conventional hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is often prescribed by GPs and menopause clinics to address these issues, although there is a small increased risk of breast cancer and heart disease associated with its use. Bio-identical hormone therapy (BHRT), on the other hand, is derived from natural sources and is identical to the exact hormones produced by the human body. Some bio-identical hormones can be found in conventional HRT and are FDA approved.

BHRT clinics and doctors individualise treatment based on a patient’s needs, as determined by blood tests measuring the inner circle hormones (oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone). Follow-up appointments and repeat tests are necessary to monitor progress. BHRT is often tailored to the individual in terms of dosage and delivery method through the use of compounding pharmacies.
There is some controversy surrounding the safety and effectiveness of BHRT compared to conventional HRT. Some specialists argue that there is insufficient evidence to support the use of BHRT, and warn that it may be dangerous.

However, a French study involving small number of postmenopausal women found that those who took BHRT did not have an increased risk of heart disease or cancer. Ultimately, BHRT may be seen as a safer and more personalised alternative to conventional HRT for those seeking relief from hormonal imbalances.
