Dry Skin Treatment
Dry Skin is a common condition causing fine flakes and dry patches. One of the most common symptoms of dry skin is itching and is more common in the Winter months than summer months.
It is a very common problem caused by the lack of water in the most superficial layers of the skin. The skin of the elderly tends to have naturally reduced oil content, particularly the hands, arms and legs. This makes the elderly more prone to dry skin than the young and can be associated with use of certain medication or medical conditions such as hypothyroidism.
Certain skin conditions lead to skin dryness and irritation such as eczema or psoriasis and bacterial infections. Repeated scratching of the irritated skin may lead to skin thickening and darkened patches that can be distressing if visible on exposed areas.
Extremely dry skin may cause cracks and breaks in the skin disturbing the skin barrier protection which may lead to secondary infections. This may require treatment with antibiotic medication.
Simple prevention and treatment is necessary for the treatment of dry skin. Basic steps to prevent this condition include the avoidance of soaps and chemical cleansers or certain beauty treatments such as fake tan application. Untreated, dry skin may result in complications including eczema, secondary infections, cellulitis and skin decolouration.
