Many people become distressed with the appearance of dark circles around the eye area. There are many causes for dark circles around the eye, including heredity, bruising, age, hyperpigmentation, allergies, fatigue, anaemia, asthma, and certain medications.

In most cases of dark circles under the eyes is caused by blood vessels under thinning skin as this is this thinnest skin on the body.

Causes of Dark Circles

Age
Dark circles are likely to become more noticeable and permanent with age. As we age the skin loses collagen, becomes thinner and more translucent.
Periorbital Hyperpigmentation
Periorbital hyperpigmentation is the name for when there is more melanin produced around the eyes than is usual, giving them a darker colour.
Ezcema, Asthma and Allergies
Any irritation that causes the sufferer to rub or `itch` the eye can contribute to the darkness due to rubbing the delicate area of skin.
Anaemia
Iron deficiency anaemia is believed to cause dark circles due to the lack of oxygen being carried to the tissue. During pregnancy and menstruation the veins become more visible under the skin.
